What Truly Counts

One who trusts in H'shem concerns himself not with material worries, rather he is constantly reviewing and trying to improve his service of H'shem.  He knows what truly counts in the end is the way in which he spends his time in this world gathering mitzvot and his  Avodat H'shem  pg 455 Nefesh Hachaim The Yetzer Hara may confuse you so much that you end up ignoring one's warnings that you are transgressing so that you don't seem as though you care and fear more what others think of you than what GD does.  Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 8 pg 130

Do not worry about a world that is not yours

One who trusts in H'shem does not worry or get excited about the future as he knows it is not in his control.  "Do not worry about tomorrow's trouble for you do not know what a day may bring.  Suppose that tomorrow he is no more he will have worried about a world that is not his".  pg 455 Nefesh Hachaim The Yetzer Hara may confuse you by trying to get you to an "exalted" fear of GD and not fear of punishment.  He may try to convince you that being afraid of punishment and embarrassment is a sin.  This may lead you to sin if you are not in the state of exalted fear of GD  Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 8 pg 130

No regrets and no worries

One who trusts in H'shem conducts his life as such: He does not regret what he does not have, is not obsessed with what he does have, concerns himself with what he needs today, and trusts that "H'shem will lengthen his days and provide his livelihood and daily bread"                  pg 455 Nefesh Hchaim A tactic that the Yetzer Hara may use is to show you examples of how our Avos and those before giving the Torah were immersed in connecting to H'shem in everything they did.  We can not be fooled.  We must follow the directives of the Torah and the Torah authorities following their instructions and laws of how and when to fulfill the mitzvot. Prologue to Gate Four, Chapter 7 pg 129/130

You can not help him

One who does not trust in H'shem not only believes that what you have is at his expense he is under the illusion that his assets, children even you can help him.  This way of thinking causes him to hold others in "contempt, hating, slandering and cursing them" for not coming to his aid. In reality, this behavior causes the higher worlds to judge him in "contempt and he is detested" in this world and the next.                         pg 453 Nefesh Hachaim                                                                                                                                    Another tr...

Their success is not at your expense

One who trusts in H'shem is loved by all and he loves them back.  One who does not trust in H'shem has no friends as his distrust causes jealousy believing that if they have it he won't and that their success and livelihood are at his expense.                                                                                                                         pg 453 Nefesh Hachaim                                                                                    ...

In his heart

One who trusts in H'shem feels safe with others as he knows his success and failures are not in their hands and they alone can not cause him loss or harm.  " He does not fear them nor does he expect from them".                                                                                                                                                                pg 453 Nefesh Hachaim                                                        ...

Be a person of trust and others will trust you

One who is known to be a person of Emuna is well-liked and trusted by all.  They are confident that he will treat them kindly without anger, and their families and money are safe as all his actions are done with honesty and purity.   pg 453 Nefesh Hachaim "The essential part of every mitzvah is the performance, purity of intention is of secondary concern" One who performs a mitzvah will get the reward and credit, one who misses doing the mitzvah, even if he was preparing himself will get punished for having missed the mitzvah. Prologue to Gate Four chapter 5 pg 127

Do not be duped

One who does not trust in H'shem will use any means honest or dishonest to acquire wealth without giving any thought to his later end.  451/453 Nefesh Hachaim Another tactic of the Yetzer Hara in his efforts of distraction is to persuade one to be involved in "purification" the entire day missing the opportunities to fulfill his obligations and mitzvot properly. One must be aware that if he is inclined to focus more on purifying his thoughts than on what is commanded of him, he has been tricked by the Yetzer Hara. Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 4 pg 126/127

Time

One who trusts in H'shem before choosing an occupation makes sure it will allow him to practice his religious and secular beliefs and obligations always focused on his ultimate reward.  His intention in earning a living is never to feed his material desires, yet to fulfill his obligations to H'shem and his religious duties.  He knows that when he takes these precautions his livelihood  will lead him to live a life of health and not of sickness pg451 Nefesh Hachaim Just imagine what would happen to an observing Jew that would fall prey to the persuasions of the Yetzer Hara.  Imagine the Yetzer would convince him, his kavana , and intentions were more important than fulfilling the mitzvah at the obligated time.  What would come of trying to blow the shofar , fast on Yom Kippur , shake lulav and esrog , build a succa  or eat his matzah ?  All these mitzvot are time-restricted.  The Yeter Hara wants to make the Tzadik miss all of these obligat...

Purpose

One who trusts in H'shem is satisfied with what he has and uses the excess to serve H'shem by helping others.  One who does not trust in H'shem never sees what he has as being enough and is always on the chase for more. He will hold his money instead of using it to help others, eventually losing it and having nothing to show for his it.  451 Nefesh Hachaim The goal of the Yetzer Harah when he seeks to destroy a Tzakik is by making the mitzvah's intentions, kedusha, and kavanh more important than the fulfillment of the  mitzvah itself. In H'shem's eyes, one who sets out to serve Him should not be bombarded with fear of intentions, and kedusha , he should fulfill the mitzvah at its appointed time with the best intentions he can, knowing he is fulfilling his Torah  obligation and it is the most precious thing to H'shem. Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 4 pg 126

Pay attention to the time

One who trusts in GD if he has more then what he needs, he uses it to serve H'shem "with a generous and cheerful heart" pg 451 Nefesh Hachaim  One way the Yetzer Hara trips us up is by telling us to prepare for a Mitzvah,  as much as possible to be in the right mindset of Kedusha, so much so we miss the Zman of the Mitzvah.  He will tell us it is fine, not to worry about the time.  "Ultimately you will be left with  having done the mitzvah neither at its set time nor with the proper Kavanah" Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 4 125/126

The Yetzer Harah dresses up as the Yetzer Hatov

One who chases a career for its own sake is not considered one who trust in H'shem.  The reason is he is putting his trust in his career and not looking at it as a means to an end. When it provides for him he applauds it, when it causes him a loss he scorns and abandons it.  pg 451                                               Nefesh Hachaim  The bigger the Tzadik the stronger his Yetzer Hara, to the point that his Yetzer Hara must pretend to be his Yeter Hatov to mislead him.  The Yetzer Hara will try to convince him only Torah and Mitzvot with pure intentions are desired by GD. The Yetzer Hara's goal is to make the Tzadik feel inadequate and quit.  He will try to trick him into thinking his learning is not worthy by GD if it is not of perfect L'Shma standards by bringing convincing arguments from the Torah and Mishneh.  We all must be aw...

Don't give up or give in

Someone who trusts in H'shem knows that if he were to lose his livelihood H'shem will provide for him by other means.  He does not give up or give in, he continues to pursue other means all the while knowing H'shem is taking care of him.  449/451 Nefesh Hachaim  The nonbelievers, those who have contempt for Torah Scholars, and ridicule and denounce someone for learning Torah Lo L'ishma it says of them "they will forever burn in Gehinnom."  This is because their actions cause one to be discouraged from learning Torah and reaching their potential of becoming a Talmid Chochom  Prologue to Gater Four, Chapter 3 pg 123

Grow closer to H'shem not your profession

One who trusts in H'shem does not grow attached or reliant on his profession for being the source of his profit.  He grows closer to H'shem and thanks Him for the gift  pg 449 Nefesh Hachaim    Those who ridicule one for doing a mitzvah or learning Torah, Lo L'Shma will be punished, namely losing his portion in the world to come Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 3 pg 123

GD commanded us to be involved in the world

One who trusts in H'shem, his intention in pursuing a livelihood is not to make money or receive the honor.  Rather he understands that by going out to work he has a unique opportunity to serve H'shem in the way he trusts in Him, and helps others.  GD commanded us to be "involved in the world" to bring the world to its ultimate purpose of  making H'shem's name great  pg 449 Nefesh Hachaim  One who finds himself doing Mitzvot or learning Torah for reasons such as prided or honor and knows that he should be doing them for their own sake, says the Gemara he should not give up but keep at it constantly and he will eventually reach the level of doing them for the proper motives. Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 3 pg 122/123
