His gains and losses are in the hands of H'shem

One who trusts in GD knows that his employment does not earn him his pay.  He understands that his gains and losses are all in the hands of H'shem pg 449  Nefesh Hachaim Learning Torah, like any other endeavor, is akin to climbing a ladder.   He must start at the bottom and work his way up.  This is why H'shem loves the learning of one who begins Lo L'Shma.  As he grows his assent will be L'Shma.  Prologue to Gate Four, Chaper 3 pg 122

Never happy

One who does not trust in H'shem is never happy not in the good times or the bad.  In the good times he is never satisfied and in a state of distress and anxiety and in bad times he is blaming and deperessed.  pg 449 Nefesh Hachaim  Learning Torah  for any reason be it L'Shmah or Lo L'Shma  is praised and preferred to doing a Mitzvah, since a Mitzvah saves one from punishment but Torah even one word saves him from sinning Prologue to Gate Four, Chapter 2 pg 122

Heart at ease

Rabbenu Bachya continuously repeats the idea that the result of true Bitachon in H'shem is a  "soul at rest and a heart at ease."  One who truly trusts in H'shem knows that whatever decree may come his way H'shem is fully in charge and he is completely calm knowing H'shem will take care of him in this world and the next.  pg 449 Nefesh Hachaim Why is learning Torah even for the wrong reasons accepted and praised?  Because by learning Torah, doing Mitzvot, and being humble even for ulterior motives, he will eventually come to do it for its own sake.   Prologue to gate Four, Chapter 2 pg 121/122

Congratulates Himself

While one who trust in GD sees everything He does as good, one who pretends to trust in GD congratulates himself for his successes and gets angry and  blames GD for the seemingly bad pg449 Nefesh Hachaim We see that the Mitzvah of learning Torah is more precious to GD than any other mitzvah by the fact that even if one learns it for the wrong reasons or no reason at all he will still be fully rewarded in this world as well as in the next. Prologue to gate Four, Chapter 2 pg 121

Distinctions between those that trust and those that do not

There are several distinctions between those that rely on H'shem for their Parnasa, livelihood and those that do not. The first is basic trust, which means if he sees the good or not.  The real test of trust comes not when someone gets what they want, but when someone sees disappointment is still happy and can say "I know in the end it will be good because H'shem is in control and He only has the best of intentions for me" pg 447/449 Nefesh Hachaim Learning Torah for all reasons is praiseworthy and he will be rewarded, other than if he learned Torah to criticize it.   Such an individual will be  scolded and the "Torah turns into poison for such a person" Prologue to Gate Four, Chapter 2 pg 121

Service over comfort

Throughout our history, many have chosen to be martyrs for the sake of heaven.  Whoever chooses the service of H'shem over the comforts and pleasures of this world even in the harshest of conditions will be "worthy of Divine grace in the bliss of the World- to -come". pg 447 Nefesh Hachaim One who learns Torah Lo Lishmah, (not for the right reasons) will earn his place in heaven and it will not harm his portion.  Likewise, one is not allowed to judge this type of individual as his practice is accepted by H'shem.  Prologue to Gate Four Chapter Two page 121

Unique Qualities in the service of GD

What are the unique qualities of those that stand out in the service of H'shem.  1. They guide GD's servants to His service 2. They have patients and endurance in times of trial and tribulation 3. They regard everything else as of slight importance compared with the fulfillment of the Creator commandments  pg 447 Nefesh Hachaim Arrogance can come in the form of one judging another's service in prayer or piety in learning.  His judgment is wrong for, in the eyes of H'shem whoever tries to serve Him, he is regarded as a servant and is beloved by H'shem  Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 2 pg 120

Deserve the reward

One must not fool himself into believing that all he must do is trust in H'shem to receive a reward.  He must do what is necessary to deserve the reward he would like H'shem to bestow upon him.  pg 447 Leilui Nishmat Paya bat Yitzchak V' Michal z"l Rav Fanger's beloved grandmother  Nefesh H'Chaim Arrogance makes the wise lose their wisdom.  If this could happen to Hillel when a comment that could be perceived as haughty caused him to forget a halacha, how careful we must all be if Hillel was susceptible to this mida we are all in danger.  Prologue to Gate Four Chapter 1

Follow their ways

One should try and strive to follow the ways of our Tzadikim who devoted their lives to serving H'shem in their actions and hearts.  They felt the spiritual loneliness of this world and strived to delight only in Him.  When we try to achieve these goals we then must trust that H'shem will reward us in the world to come as He did them.  pg445 Nefesh Hachaim When someone acts with haughtiness it is as though he was Oved Avoda Zarah, denies the existence of H'shem, and committed adultery.  The Gemara describes the Shechina's response to haughtiness as "I and he can not live in the same world"  Prologue to Gate 4 Chapter One, pg 119 '

Replace it with love for Him

How should one go about deserving H'shems gifts in Olam Haba? He can begin by banishing the loves of this world and replacing it with the love of the Creator.  pg 445 Nefesh Hachaim Never should the increase of purity in servicing H'shem come with haughtiness and pride, as it is the "root cause of all bad qualities" Prologue to Gate Four Chaper 1 pg 119
