Indescribable Good

Those chosen by GD to enjoy the treasures of the world to come will experience "  a great bounty of indescribable good.., one should employ the mean to attain the high degree of pious worthy of this Divine grace" pg 445 Nefesh Hachaim The more you internalize the lessons we have covered so far, guiding you to clearer thinking and pure intention  the more your service of H'shem in the areas of learning Torah, Mitzvot, and Yirat Shamayhim will develop the purity of intentions as well  Prologue to Gae Four Chapter 1 pg 119

Do not rely on your deeds

Do not rely on your deeds to gain your reward in Olam Habah as only H'shem's kindness will not erase all our deeds on the account of what we owe GD for the continuous and endless gifts we receive from him on a constant basis.  pg445 Nefesh Hachaim The idea that H'shem surrounds the worlds, that at creation He confined Himself to make room for anything other than Him is an idea we must etch into our minds and ponder. Ideas that were not openly taught as in how H'shem fill the world is for H'shem alone.  Gate Three, Chapter six pg 115/116

Only H'shem Knows

One must do all he can to try and "repay H'shem the debt of gratitude" and trust H'shem will reward him.  "Be not like servants who serve the master on condition of receiving a reward, but be like servants who serve the master not on condition of receiving reward and let the fear of heaven be upon you (Avos) pg 445 Nefesh Hachaim Not the Angles not man not even Moshe knew "H'shem's place, only H'shem Himself knows the essence of this hidden and unfathomable idea" Gate Three, Chapter Six pg 115

Show Gratitude

One should not trust in his actions and the reward he hopes will come, he should " Show gratitude for the Creators favors continually bestowed upon him" without being preoccupied with future reward. pg 445  Nefesh Hachaim The practice of thinking and talking about how H'shem fills the world what was before and how He fills it yet today is greatly discouraged.  Our minds can not comprehend and we should discourage such actions as it says " Go back to praying to H'shem and be in awe of HIm.  The greatest sages cannot understand these matters".  Gate Three, Chapter 6 pg 115

It is an aspect of trust

An aspect of Bitachon, trust in H'shem, is our belief that He will reward the righteous for their service and punish the wicked for their transgressions, in this world as well as in the World to Come.  pg 443 Nefesh Hachaim From man's perspective, it is proper even required to think about and meditate on Torah thoughts in clean places while forbidden in others.  From H'shem's perspective, He fills the world without discretion.  Gate Three, Chapter 6 pg 114/115

Ultimate reward in the World to Come

Our objective in this world must be  to find favor in GD’s eyes, since the ultimate reward in the World to  Come,  is to grow closer to GD and His divine light. Pg 443 Nefesh Hachaim GD’s names define His attributes according to how we on earth see Him and relate to Him.  If GD so wills it He can become so great the world can not contain Him, or become so “small” He can speak with a man from among the hairs on his head. Gate Three chapter Five pg 114

What pertains to us in this world

The messages sent through the Neviim by H'shem,  to us were subject to time and place.  If we are in this world He will direct us on what pertains to us in this world.  Only those who walked among the angles as Yehoshua ben Yehotzadak did, were privileged to be spoken to about that world. pg 443 Nefesh Hachaim All physical elements of this world we perceive with our senses.  H'shem is the life-force behind everything and imbues life into them. Since we can not see H'shem with our eyes we can only relate to Him with our intellect. Gate Three, Chapter Five pg 113/114

H'shem knows what is in the heart and mind of man

As a community, we are responsible for visible acts of service or transgression.  What is hidden in the hearts and minds only H'shenm knows which is why the reward and punishments are concealed and reward in the world to come is not elaborated on.  pg /441/443 Our sages compared the relationship of H'shem to the world as the soul to the body.  Just as we feel our body but only know in our intellect we have a soul.  So too the world was created to seem as though it has an independent natural functionality. In reality, it is all H'shem a concept we can only recognize with our intellect.  Gate Three, Chapter Five pg 113

He made room for the world

The proof of our statement that visible actions will produce visible consequences comes from  Parshat Im B'chukkosay where it specifically states that one who does a visible positive action will get a visible reward.  One that does a visible transgression will receive a visible punishment.  pg 441 Nefesh Hachaim Before creation H'shem filled the entire world.  When He made creation he drew into Himself leaving room for the world to exist.  Gate Three, Chapter Five pg 113

The soul ramains clean

For visible, physical good deeds the reward is likewise, visible.  For hidden good deeds such as in one's heart and mind H'shem's rewards are also hidden, revealed in the world to come.  pg 441 Nefesh Hachaim  "For I H'shem has not changed" refers to the fact that although H'shem fills the world in the pure and unpure places, He remains the same.   Just as the soul fills the body in the clean as well as unclean places and the soul still remains pure and unblemished.  Gate Three, Chapter 4 pg 112/113

It is a debt

Punishment for sin is a "debt" that must be paid.  It is only out of H'shem's enormous Chesed that he forgives our sins. pg 441 Nefesh Hachaim H'shem was One before the world was created and he remained One, filling all of Creation.  He is unchanged.  Gate Three Chapter 4 pg 112

It is all Chesed

The good H'shem bestows upon us, is not on account of our deeds, for even the smallest of our actions can not equally the tremendous Chesed H'shem showers on as at every moment.  "All rewards are a result of GD's grace towards him" pg439/441 Nefesh Hachaim H'shem fills all the worlds and all that exists. That, that the world was created and "took up space" does not exclude H'shem from being in every place as it says of H'shem  "there is nothing else besides Him" Gate Three, Chapter Four pg 112

Better to keep your distance than approach

Why would all our good deeds not be sufficient to earn us a place in Olam Haba? "Even if his good deeds were as numerous as the sand in the see they still would not be equal to even one of the favors bestowed upon him by the Creator, all the more so if he committed a sin": pg 439.  Lilu Nishmat Rav Dovid Feinstein ×–"ל Nefesh Hachaim The idea that the world is actually an illusion and that nothing exists other than H'shem's Oneness is a lofty concept that should be carefully approached and distanced from at the same time.  One must understand that Kabbalah and its lofty teachings are not for everyone and it may do more harm than good if the one learning it is not on the correct level or mindset to be doing so.  Gate Three Chapter Three pg110/111/112

There is no reward without H'shem's Rachamim

Keeping all the Mitzvot of the Torah scrupulously and dedicating one's life to return others to the path of Torah and service of H'shem still would not be enough to earn him a place in Olam Habba without H'shem's infinite grace and generosity.    pg 439                                                                         Nefesh Hachaim Although the world seems to run independently of H'shem, one must understand that its existence is being held up every single moment by the will of  H'shem.   It is for this reason, the Sages refer to H'shem as Makom, the place that the world stands on and is sustained by. Gate Three, Chapter Two page 110  Leilu Nishmat Reb Jonathan Sacks a brilliant mind, a tremendous loss for Am Yisroel

An illusion held up by GD

One's good deeds alone are not enough to earn him a place in Olam Habba.  He must also have encouraged others and taught them the proper way to serve GD. Together with the merit of teaching others to serve Him, his own righteous deeds, trust, and submissions to the Creator, he can hope to earn himself a place in Olam Habba.  pg 439                                                                  Nefesh Hachaim The name Hamakom describes H'shem being the force holding up the world on His will alone. Man can not comprehend that we are "merely an illusion....constantly kept in existence by the will of H'shem. Gate Two, Chapter Three pg 109/110

The aim is for His sake

The true aim of serving GD is not for the sake of reward or fear of punishment, yet "for His sake, alone"  Man's desire to follow what H'shem has commanded him to do and not do should be "To draw near to Him" pg 439                                                     Nefesh Hachaim  "The continued existence of all the worlds depends completely on H'shem.  If He would cease to will their continued existence they would revert to absolute nothingness in an instant" Gate Three, Chapter 1 pg 109

The correct dicipline

A child that is brought up with the correct discipline as he reaches his adolescence, he will not need the immediate pleasures promised him for going in the right direction.  He will realize there are more substantial rewards and deeper meanings to what he is being instructed to do.  pg 437                                 Nefesh Hachaim Just as the soul nourishes the body, H'shem nourishes the world Gate 3, Chapter 2 pg 109
