Under His wings

The Creator of the world is "absolutely wise and all-knowing" as to what will help or harm His creations.  373 14 What Has Shemittah Sanctity Edible Shemittah food has Shemittah sanctity, and may not be discarded. Inedible pits or peels, or the parts of fruits or vegetables that are generally removed (such as the stems of fresh peppers) are not sanctified and may be thrown away normally. Similarly, rotten pieces of food may be discarded. Although they are not sanctified, these pits or peels may not be thrown away if some of the edible food is still attached. A very small amount of food, which is the amount that one would generally throw away when attached to the pit or peel during other, non-Shemittah, years, does not present an issue; the peel or pit may be thrown away. Shemittah Food May Not Be Misused I Sanctified Shemittah food may not be used in a way in which this item is not generally prepared. For example, foods that are normally eaten cooked  – like potatoes – m...

He knows you best

If I were a writer and one of my characters was in need, would I ask my friend how I would help my character, or would I know best? H'shem is our creator. No one knows what we need better than him. 373 13 Scraps and Leftovers II Kedushas Shevi'is (Shemittah sanctity) remains on Shemittah food only as long as the item remains fit for consumption. When the food is no longer considered edible, it is no longer sanctified and may be thrown in the garbage normally. So, another way of dealing with Shemittah scraps or leftovers is to just leave them out of the way for a day or two, for example on an open porch or windowsill. Once the food spoils, it may be thrown away. It is sometimes easier to do this (for example by leftover soup that has kedushas Shevi'is, that may not be poured down the drain) than pouring it in a bag to put in the garbage can or pach Shemittah. Note, when putting the still-edible foods in an out-of-the-way place, one must be careful to not put them in a place ...

Compassion and mercy

If you have felt compassion or mercy from man, know that it is H'shem using him as a messenger.  373 12-Introduction to Kedushas Shevi’is (Shemittah Sanctity) Shemittah produce is sanctified. It must be used productively, and not destroyed, misused, or wasted. Although having kedushas Shevi’is around the house may sound scary, the truth is that its guidelines mostly involve using foods in their regular ways, and being careful about how scraps and other leftovers are disposed of. The coming articles will discuss many of the basic issues to be aware of when dealing with Shemittah produce. Other than food, Shemittah sanctity imbues many products made from plants grown in Eretz Yisrael. This includes plants grown for animal food, for lamp-lighting oil, to make natural dyes or cleansing agents, as well as fragrant flowers and spices. These items, as well, must be used and disposed of in a manner consistent with their sanctity. Scraps and Leftovers I Sanctified Shemittah food may n...

Trust

When one internalizes how much H'shem is concerned and loves him, it will be easier to place his trust in Him.  Hashem's "nature" is of pure kindness. When one truly grasps this idea, he will willingly trust, surrender, trust his guidance, never suspect His judgment, or be angered by what He has decided is best for him.   371 11 Picking Shemittah Produce Shemittah foods – which, as we learned, are hefker – may not be picked or gathered in the same way that an owner normally harvests his crops throughout the other years. They may not be collected in the usual large-scale ways, for example, picking all of the fruits from the tree in one’s yard, as well as ideally not using the regular tools to pick whichever foods are gathered, if possible. Instead, only a few fruits or vegetables may be picked at one time, that is, for short-term use, the amount that one’s family would generally eat over the next few days. This restriction applies both to the one who owns the land on...

In good hands

The seven characteristics that we described Compassion, Knowledge, Strength, Awareness, Exclusivity,  Responsible, Generous, are found in the Creator alone and no other.  If one were to trust in any other he would be a fool  369 10 Hefker II Hefker II Only the foods growing in Eretz Yisrael becomes hefker during Shemittah, and not the other parts of the tree, plants, or the ground itself. Ruining someone else’s property while taking hefker Shemittah foods is stealing. Note, that most vegetables are sefichin (discussed in a previous article) and may not be picked, or eaten. And, any Shemittah fruits and (permitted) vegetables that are picked must be eaten under conditions of Shemittah sanctity (which will be discussed in a future article). Hefker III The only foods that are hefker is the Shemittah produce. Now, the Shemittah status of different types of foods is determined at different stages of their growth (vegetables from when they are picked, most fruits from the...
