If a person puts himself in danger and manages to survive it was only be because the Creator helped him. H'shem took the rewards he earned for either this world or the world to come and used those merits to save him. Rabbenu Bachya brings down (from Miseches Shabbas 32) " A person should never stay in a dangerous place and say that a miracle will be performed for him, lest no miracle be performed and if it is performed for him , his merits are diminished"
pg 405
This idea should NOT be confused with trusting H'shem in times of crisis or dangerous places that one did not intentionally put him self into or regrets once he did. As we learn form Dovid Hamelech "Afelu cherev chad...." Even if the sharp blade of the knife is resting on his neck he should NEVER GIVE UP HOPE that H'shem will save him. We also know that if someone Daven's for something and is answered it will not be taken from him merits since he bought it with his Tefilot. "Ain Shum Tefilah SheChozeret Raka"
