16 Shemittah Food May Not Be Used in Ways Other Than Eating Them

Shemittah foods may not be used in ways other than eating them. For example, although lemon juice (which contains citric acid) is effective in polishing silver, removing its tarnish, and cleaning stains from clothing, juice from a Shemittah-sanctified lemon may not be used for these purposes. Similarly, Shemittah oil may not be used to grease a pan, when the amount of oil is minimal and does not serve to also fry the food or add to its taste.

Feeding Shemittah Food to Animals

Shemittah food that is fit for human consumption (like leftover lettuce or carrots) may not be fed to animals (for example pet turtles or rabbits).

Regarding Shemittah food that is no longer fit for human consumption, but remains fit for animal consumption: in a place where these foods are generally fed to animals, it remains sanctified. And, in a place where these foods are not generally fed to animals, many Poskim rule that they may be discarded.

The Segulah and the promise of saying Avraham's mother's name

There is a well-known segulah from the Kaf HaChaim citing HaRav Refael Abuchatzera that one who says Avraham Avinu's mother's name אמתלאי בת כרנבו (Amtlai bat Karnevo) 17 times before Oseh Shalom in Shmoneh Esrei is promised they will have chen and will be protected. When Amtlai found out she was pregnant, Nimrod had made a gezeirah that all baby boys were to be killed right after birth, since his advisors had told him a boy would be born who would show the world who the real GD is. Not knowing what to do, she called out: "Whoever the GD of the world is, if this is a boy, save him!" H'shem helped her hide her pregnancy from everyone, including Terach, her husband. When it was time to deliver, she went into a cave and gave birth. It was a boy. She called him Avram. She knew if he was discovered, he would be killed.
