14 What Has Shemittah Sanctity

Edible Shemittah food has Shemittah sanctity, and may not be discarded. Inedible pits or peels, or the parts of fruits or vegetables that are generally removed (such as the stems of fresh peppers) are not sanctified and may be thrown away normally. Similarly, rotten pieces of food may be discarded.

Although they are not sanctified, these pits or peels may not be thrown away if some of the edible food is still attached. A very small amount of food, which is the amount that one would generally throw away when attached to the pit or peel during other, non-Shemittah, years, does not present an issue; the peel or pit may be thrown away.



Shemittah Food May Not Be Misused I

Sanctified Shemittah food may not be used in a way in which this item is not generally prepared. For example, foods that are normally eaten cooked  – like potatoes – may not be eaten raw. And foods that are normally eaten raw may not be cooked. Foods that are roasted (many types of nuts) may not be cooked.  And vegetables that are not normally juiced may not be juiced. 

The guidelines as to which uses are considered “normal” in this regard are as follows: If a particular way of preparing this food is accepted in one community, this use is now considered acceptable, and people living in other communities may also prepare the Shemittah food in this manner.

The Segulah and the promise of saying Avraham's mother's name

There is a well-known segulah from the Kaf HaChaim citing HaRav Refael Abuchatzera that one who says Avraham Avinu's mother's name אמתלאי בת כרנבו (Amtlai bat Karnevo) 17 times before Oseh Shalom in Shmoneh Esrei is promised they will have chen and will be protected. When Amtlai found out she was pregnant, Nimrod had made a gezeirah that all baby boys were to be killed right after birth, since his advisors had told him a boy would be born who would show the world who the real GD is. Not knowing what to do, she called out: "Whoever the GD of the world is, if this is a boy, save him!" H'shem helped her hide her pregnancy from everyone, including Terach, her husband. When it was time to deliver, she went into a cave and gave birth. It was a boy. She called him Avram. She knew if he was discovered, he would be killed.
